Research Group Interest: Emerging Technologies and use in teacher education

Center Involvement Role: To work with content faculty in developing technology-enhanced (specifically those related to emerging technologies e.g. dynamic and collaborative applications associated with Web 2.0) learning activities that promote teaching and learning best practice. One such project involves working with teacher educators/researchers in developing an online collaborative research agenda via use of a wiki.

Research Group Interest: Critical Pedagogy, Action Research

Center Involvement Role: Research and development of manuscripts addressing issues in social justice for teachers of social studies K-12. A focus on critical pedagogy to enhance and support social studies instruction for the 21st century.

Research Group Interest: Science Education

Center Involvement Role: Develop and maintain continuous communication and coordination between the Alabama Energy Education Project and the state's AMSTI initiative. Provide support for teachers' involved in online mentorship in energy education.

Research Group Interest: Science Education

Center Involvement Role: Dr. Sundberg will participate as a co-editor of the next publication in the series Research on Science Education on “The Impact of the Laboratory and Technology on Learning and Teaching Science K – 16” which is a series published under the aegis of the Office of Research on Teaching in the Disciplines by Information Age publishing. She will work with authors, review chapter content for accuracy and depth, and proof material.

Welcomes New 2007 Associate Members

The Office of Teaching in the Disciplines welcomes Dr. Cheryl Sundberg who was approved as an adjunct faculty associate in November and new associates accepted in December including Dr. Vivian Wright, Instructional Technology/Computers &Applied Tech., Curriculum & Instruction, UA, Dr. Lois McFadyen Christensen, ECE/ELEM, Curriculum & Instruction, UAB and Dr. Carolyn S. Pistorius, Instructional Technology/Computers &Applied Tech., Curriculum & Instruction, Regional Director of AMSTI

Dr. Carolyn S. Pistorius’ research group interest is Science Education.  She will develop and maintain continuous communication and coordination between the Alabama Energy Education Project and the state's AMSTI initiative. Additionally, she will provide support for teachers' involved in online mentorship in energy education.

The Office of Research on Teaching in the Disciplines (ORTD) includes Faculty Associates and Graduate Research Associates.  Associates identify a role and research task which they will carry out in association with a Co-Director of the Office in one of the following areas or an interdisciplinary area: Education for English Language Learners, Mathematics Education, Social Studies Education, Science Education, Special Education, Teacher Education, or Technology Education.  An Application for Associate Status is filled out with a supporting signature from the appropriate Co-Director and is reviewed by ORTD Co-Directors at the next Office meeting. If accepted, the Director signs the form and welcomes the Associate to the Office. Associates must have a project/role on which they will work; graduate students must present a timeline in addition to their project/role.
